A Kelowna teacher is being recognized for his work in history education with a major international honour.

Graeme Stacey has been awarded a Fellowship from the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes. The non-profit group, based in Fort Scott, Kansas, supports teachers who highlight people in history who made a difference but are not well known.

Stacey will travel to Kansas next week to work with other teachers and staff at the centre.

“It will be an honour to study with and learn alongside this special group,” Stacey said in a statement. “The fellowship’s focus on unsung heroes shares stories that motivate people to make a difference. Stories help create empathy and understanding.”

Stacey has received national awards for his teaching and has been a leader in Holocaust education in B.C. since the early 2000s. He also helped shape the Genocide Studies 12 course now taught in schools across the province.

Superintendent Kevin Kaardal said Stacey’s work is helping students across B.C. learn more about history and the power of compassion.

“Mr. Stacey’s work with the fellowship will help grow an area of study that builds the empathy our world so badly needs,” Kaardal said.
