Traffic headache

Busy West Kelowna intersection officially closed for major project

Jun 19, 2025 | 9:59 AM

Drivers in West Kelowna are being advised of significant detours as crews officially begin major roadwork at the intersection of Butt Road and Old Okanagan Highway.

The intersection is now fully closed as part of the city’s ongoing upgrades to transportation infrastructure in the area. The work includes deep excavation and installation of underground utilities, with construction expected to continue until fall.

The city says the closure is necessary to support the future realignment and extension of Butt Road, a key component of long-term transportation plans for the region.

Detour routes are in place along Elliott Road, Reece Road and Louie Drive. Officials say signage is posted throughout the area to guide drivers around the construction zone.

While the closure is expected to create some delays, the city says every effort is being made to minimize disruptions and maintain access to nearby homes and businesses.

Local traffic and emergency vehicles will still be able to reach properties adjacent to the construction zone. Pedestrian access will be limited, and the public is being asked to avoid the area wherever possible for safety.

The city says it will continue to provide updates as work progresses through the coming months.
