Intersection in West Kelowna to shut down until fall for infrastructure project

Jun 11, 2025 | 9:25 AM

A full closure is coming to a key West Kelowna intersection next week as the city launches a major infrastructure and transportation upgrade.

Starting Wednesday, June 18, the intersection of Butt Road and Old Okanagan Highway will be fully closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic, including weekends, until fall 2025.

According to the City of West Kelowna, the closure is needed “to complete the work safely and efficiently” as crews undertake a complex series of upgrades.

“This project involves significant underground utility installations and deep excavation, making it unsafe, costly and inefficient to allow through traffic while work is underway,” the city stated in a release.

The improvements will include additional left-turn lanes in all directions, a new westbound right-turn lane on Butt Road, over 600 metres of dedicated bike lanes, and 350 metres of new concrete sidewalk. More than 170 metres of aging watermain will also be replaced, along with drainage upgrades near Westbank Creek.

While traffic will be rerouted, the city says “all area businesses will remain open and accessible, via detours, during construction.”

Detour routes include Reece Road, Bering Road, Elliott Road and Louie Drive. Motorists are advised to allow extra time and follow posted signage. Transit routes will also be adjusted, and riders are encouraged to check BC Transit’s website for the latest updates.

“Access for emergency services through the work area will be provided when possible,” the city added.

Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained with the help of traffic control personnel.

The construction schedule remains subject to weather and contractor timelines.
