Local group opposed to development proposal in the Commonage

A North Okanagan organization is opposing 4,000 home development proposed in Vernon.

Kerkhoff Develop-Build has proposed building the new neighbourhood on a property at 580 Commonage Road, with plans to set 1,800 of those homes at attainable prices.

However, the proposal has met opposition from the North Okanagan Naturalists’ Club.

In an email to Vernon Matters, the Naturalists’ Club (NONC) noted the city’s most recent environmental sensitivity area mapping study identified the Commonage as one of just two areas within Vernon that were “largely comprised of intact, natural ecosystems. They provide essential habitat for species at risk and represent a unique mosaic of grasslands, sparsely vegetated areas, broadleaf woodlands often associated with gully features and woodlands. These largely contiguous natural areas provide the city with an opportunity to lead in safeguarding unique wildlife habitats and preserving natural lands for its residents to enjoy.”

The NONC asked Vernon City Council and community members to “consider the long-term damage that approval of this development will visit upon our community and region.” It noted the development would be built directly in a wildfire interface area; and on land that is classified as High or Moderate Environment Sensitivity.

It also noted the “sprawling development” goes against the city’s plan to increase density, and adds to growing concerns of water scarcity in the region.

While the NONC calls for the proposal to not go ahead, the developer will hold an open house for people to learn more about the plan Wednesday, May 14.

The open house will be held at the Vernon Recreation Centre Auditorium from 3 to 8 p.m.
