Staying Ready

Central Okanagan urges residents to be ready before disaster strikes

May 2, 2025 | 3:00 PM

With Emergency Preparedness Week set for May 4 to 10, the Central Okanagan Emergency Operations Centre is encouraging residents to take a few simple steps now to be ready for emergencies.

This year’s theme, “In it together,” highlights the importance of community-wide preparedness. Officials say while emergency crews and local governments are ready to respond, individuals also need to play a role.

“By knowing the risks, making a plan, connecting with your neighbours, and preparing an emergency kit, you are taking responsibility for your safety and the safety of your friends and loved ones,” Fire Chief and Emergency Program Coordinator Dwight Seymour said.

Residents are urged to prepare for local hazards such as wildfires, floods and severe storms by making a household plan and assembling a 72-hour emergency kit with food, water, medications and key documents.

People are also reminded to review their insurance policies to understand what’s covered in case of evacuation. Some home insurance plans may cover food and lodging, and businesses are encouraged to have continuity plans in place.

Emergency Support Services (ESS) offer short-term aid like shelter, food and clothing. Residents can streamline access by creating a profile through the BC Services Card app and the Evacuee Registration and Assistance tool at ess.gov.bc.ca.

Officials say being prepared also means staying connected.

Neighbours are encouraged to check in on one another, especially those who may need extra help during a crisis.
