Big White’s Peter Schumann Honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award

Peter Schumann, the former president of Big White Ski Resort, has been posthumously awarded the Jimmie Spencer Lifetime Achievement Award by the Canada West Ski Areas Association (CWSAA), a recognition reserved for individuals who have made a lasting and significant impact on the ski industry.

Schumann passed away in 2022 after a career that began at Mount Hotham in Australia and culminated in transforming Big White into a world-class destination. His leadership at the B.C. resort included major infrastructure projects like the Village Centre Mall, the Kids’ Centre, and the Gem Lake lift, as well as over $100 million in real estate development.

“Peter not only oversaw some of the resort’s greatest achievements—he built the foundation for Big White’s continued success,” said Big White CEO and President Peter Plimmer, Schumann’s nephew. “In all honesty, I think he would be embarrassed to receive this award in person, but that’s a reflection of his humble nature.”

After moving to Canada with his family in 1996, Schumann led with a philosophy inherited from his father, Des Schumann: “There is no neutral. You are either going forward or you’re in reverse.”

Known for his commitment to both excellence and people, Schumann was widely respected for championing the employees who helped bring his vision to life.

“He did it all while being a champion and friend to the people who worked for him,” Plimmer added.

Plimmer called the CWSAA honour “an incredible way to honour Peter’s lifetime of dedication to the industry,” noting the award has deep meaning for the entire Schumann family.

Though Schumann retired as company director in 2013, his legacy continues to guide Big White’s growth.
