‘Beacon of hope to wounded and weary’: Bishop of Kamloops mourns death of Pope Francis
The Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kamloops, which includes Vernon is, like over a billion of the faith worldwide, mourning the death of Pope Francis. The pontiff died Monday aged 88.
In a letter to parishioners Monday, Joseph Phuong Nguyen, said, in part, that Pope Francis captured the hearts of millions from the moment he stepped onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica in March 2013, “…not through power or prestige, but through humility, tenderness, and a deeply prayerful presence. His image of the Church as a “field hospital” became a beacon of hope to the wounded and weary,” he wrote.
Nguyen also reflected on the pontiff’s visit to Canada in 2022.
“His heartfelt apology to Indigenous Peoples, were acts of courage and humility, and they have left an indelible mark on the path of truth, reconciliation, and healing in our land,” Nguyen wrote, in part.
