The Pat Duke Memorial Arena will be getting an upgrade in the spring.

Starting April 1, construction equipment will start arriving at the arena so the metal roof and a portion of the building cladding can be replaced.

The arena that hosts minor hockey, figure skating, ringette, and leisure skating in Lumby was originally built in 1967 and upgraded in 2020 with additional change rooms, a viewing area, and structural reinforcements.

However, the roof structure was over 50 years old, and there have been persistent leaks that have brought maintenance to an unsustainable level.

“This arena has been a cornerstone of our community for over five decades, and these improvements are essential for its long-term sustainability”, said Lumby Mayor Kevin Acton.

“The community relies on the Pat Duke Memorial Arena to bring them together through recreation, and we are looking forward to seeing that continue for many, many years.”

The RDNO said the total project budget was $1.74 million, though $750,000 of that was being covered by the province’s Growing Communities Fund. The RDNO was providing $190,000 for the work from reserves, with the remaining $800,000 coming from other grant sources.

“We are thrilled to see these improvements for such a valued community venue,” Rick Fairbairn, Area D Director and Chair of the White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee, said.

“It will not only enhance the building’s operations but also ensure that it remains a safe and welcoming place for all residents and visitors.”

The RDNO was also working with the Lumby Men’s Shed to develop a new wooden sign for the arena once the work is complete.

It was expected that the area roof be replaced and the facility ready to reopen by August 1.
