Local and provincial fire crews will be doing fire mitigation work in Vernon later this week.

Vernon Fire Rescue and the B.C. Wildfire Service were scheduled to do a wildfire risk reduction project in the Longacre Drive and Apollo Road area Tuesday, March 18.

However, the city said that work would now go on Thursday, March 20, with site preparation work going the day before.

The work will include a prescribed burn, which may cause smoke to be visible in and around Vernon.

“Fire is a normal and natural process in many of B.C.’s ecosystems,” Darcy MacLeod, Wildfire Officer with the B.C. Wildfire Service, said.

“The BC Wildfire Service works regularly with a range of partners to undertake fuel management activities, including the use of prescribed burns, to help reduce the severity of future wildfires and related threats to communities. These projects are carefully planned and only go ahead at the right times and under the right conditions to ensure community and practitioner safety”

VFRS and BCWS members would be on site ensuring the burn is controlled, with the city noting local firefighters would also monitor the site for hot spots in the following days.

The BCWS also had a prescribed burn planned for Ellison Park Tuesday, along with one in conjunction with the Lake Country Fire Department at Jack Seaton Park Thursday.
