Power shortfall threatens Kelowna’s development growth: UDI

Feb 25, 2025 | 2:16 PM

A stark warning Tuesday from The Urban Development Institute in Kelowna.

In a press release, the advocacy group for local development said Kelowna’s real estate industry is facing major uncertainty as FortisBC warns it can’t guarantee power for new developments until at least 2027.

Developers said the delay could stall projects, impact the city’s ability to meet housing targets, and create serious financial risks.

FortisBC has pledged to invest $157 million in new infrastructure, but developers said it’s not enough to keep up with Kelowna’s rapid growth.

UDI is now pushing the province for urgent action, warning that without a solution, some projects may be scrapped altogether.

In a written statement to Vernon Matters, Senior Advisor, Corporate Communications Gary Toft said “We understand the concerns expressed by the Urban Development Institute regarding the current delays experienced with connecting to power supply.”

Toft also confirmed that FortisBC is seeing an increase in the amount of time it takes to receive important equipment and supplies, such as transformers, breakers, specialized equipment.

“FortisBC has taken action to help mitigate delays wherever possible, including purchasing and pre-ordering these key materials and equipment. We are working to meet the growing energy needs of our customers,” Toft added.
