Mounties in Kelowna are warning the public of a text message scam that been circulating recently.

The RCMP said these incidents involved unsolicited text messages claiming the RCMP is unable to deliver court documents, and urges the recipient to click a provided link to reschedule a court date.

The messages include a Canada logo, Canadian flag, and an RCMP logo in an attempt to deceive the recipient into following the directions.

“The RCMP will never ask for personal information through a text message or email,” Sgt. Laura Pollock, Kelowna RCMP Media Relations Officer, said.

“Scammers have gone to great lengths to create this message that looks like a legitimate notification, but don’t be fooled and delete the message immediately.”

The RCMP advised people inform their family and friends of this scam, particularly anyone who may be more vulnerable and not know the risks of opening links from unknown sources.

Anyone who falls victim to this or any other scam was asked to contact the RCMP and to report it to the Canadian Ante-Fraud Centre.
