Vernon’s agreement with auxiliary firefighters expiring, but members will remain employed

The City of Vernon’s agreement with the Vernon Volunteer Firefighters Association (VVFA) will expire Dec. 31, 2025, and will not be renewed, though that should not impact firefighting services.

In a release, the city said the agreement was no longer required as the services provided by the volunteer firefighter organization was integrated into Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) operations, budget and employment practices.

The VVFA was informed at the contract would not be renewed at the end of 2024, ending over two decades of service provided by the group.

The city noted the members of VVFA are not actual volunteers, as they were when the organization formed, but instead were auxiliary firefighters who were paid employees.

“Something in common between volunteer firefighters of the past and today’s auxiliary firefighters is a strong desire to be of service to the community,” VFRS Chief, David Lind, said.

“These firefighters apply for positions, undergo interviews, and meet training and operational standards. Auxiliary wages are conservative and not a primary motivator for becoming an auxiliary firefighter.”

The city noted the expiration of the contract would not affect the status or responsibilities of the auxiliary firefighters, as the city would continue to employ the 13 members, with plans to hire more auxiliary firefighters in the future.
