November was a strong month for Vernon’s housing construction sector.

The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) said there were 98 housing project starts recorded in Greater Vernon during the month in question.

That marked a significant increase from the 24 starts recorded in November of 2023.

The local projects last month included nine single homes, four row houses, and 85 apartments.

Though up on a month-over-month basis, Greater Vernon had still only seen 258 housing project starts to-date in 2024, down from the 334 recorded locally during the same period of 2023.

Data from Kelowna was limited, but the CMHC reported 52 housing starts in November, bringing the year-to-date total to 3,771 starts in 2024, both of which were up on an annual basis.

Meanwhile, the province and the country saw housing construction accelerate in November as well.

CMHC reported 4,048 housing starts in British Columbia in November, up from 3,108 in the same month in 2023.

However, to-date there have been just 39,651 housing project starts in B.C. in 2024, down from 42,941 recorded in the same period of 2023.

Canada as a whole saw 22,345 housing starts last month, up from 17,198 starts in November of 2023.

There had been 210,457 housing starts across Canada between January 1 and November 30 of 2024, up from the 204,604 starts in the same 11 months the year prior.
