Local police urge caution when online shopping

Dec 2, 2024 | 11:56 AM

As people start crossing off items from their shopping lists this holiday season, Vernon North Okanagan RCMP urge caution when shopping online.

“Online shopping can be fast, easy, and convenient, but you need to pay attention and protect your personal and financial information,” Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, stated.

“Scammers and fraudsters take advantage of the increased activity so don’t let them ruin your Holiday. Here are some essential tips that will help you shop with greater confidence and peace of mind.”

Stick to trusted sites: only buy from reputable and legitimate stores

Look for the lock: ensure sites have the “https” and the padlock icon before placing an order

Wi-fi: do not shop on public wi-fi as it’s easier for hackers to access

Too good to be true: beware of super cheap deals

Snoop before you shop: research sellers and read reviews before making a purchase

Keep an eye on your cash: check accounts and credit card history frequently

Anyone who notices suspicious activity or unauthorized transactions on their accounts are urged to contact their banks. Mounties say people can also contact Equifax or Transunion to have alerts set up for their credit accounts.

Anyone who has money or personal information stolen are urged to report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or at 1-888-495-8501.
