Youth in Vernon and the North Okanagan may need of mental health supports over the holiday season, and the public is asked to provide some assistance to the service providers.

The Vernon and District branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA Vernon) asked the public to provide some resources for the Youth Integrated Services Hub (YISH) to support operations over the holidays.

“The festive season is about coming together and celebrating. But many families are struggling with the uncertainty created by mental health and particularly not knowing where to turn for support for their young person,” Julia Payson, CMHA Vernon’s executive director, said.

“We launched YISH because youth between the ages of 12 and 24 require a place to call their own, where they feel safe and find the help they need. Youth are our future, and we must ensure they have the essential skills to create resilience and embrace their full potential.”

YISH offers a number of services including youth educational workshops, counseling, peer social drop-ins, school outreach programs, and a food box program.

The organizations asked the public to support youth programs by making a donation online or in person at the office at 3100 28th Ave. in downtown Vernon.

“Through your generosity this holiday season, you can make a meaningful difference in the lives of your child, grandchild, neighbour, or friend,” Payson said.

“You can bring light to dark days, and give the gift of hope, love, and a bright future.”

According to CMHA Vernon, roughly 70 per cent of mental health issues begin during childhood and adolescence, and while only one in five people between the ages of 15 and 24 report mental illness or substance use problems, less than 25 per cent of them receive appropriate services. The organization added suicide is among the leading cause of death of youth people.
