Vigil held to remember B.C. women, including one from Lumby, who were killed this year

A vigil was held in the province’s capital to honour women who were killed by men in B.C. this year, and among those being remembered was a Lumby woman who lost her life

The organization Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter held a vigil outside the B.C. legislature in Victoria Monday, Nov. 25, to honour 16 women killed in B.C. this year, with one sign being held in the name of Tatjana Stefanski of Lumby, who died in April.

“We are here to mourn the women and to demand systemic change,” Vancouver Rape Relief’s spokeswoman, Hilla Kerner, said.

“We want the B.C. Coroners Service to conduct an inquest for each case of femicide. The public needs to know what could have been done to protect them so we can demand and press for change.”

Tatjana Stefanski was reported missing from her home in Lumby on April 13, 2024, and the following day her body was found in a rural area.

Her ex-husband, Vitali Stefanski, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in her death. He is due back in court on Dec. 20, 2024, for a pre-trial conference.
