O’Keefe Ranch made slight changes to address financial challenges this year

O’Keefe Ranch has been doing what it can to remain operational this year.

In a release, the Historic O’Keefe Ranch Society said it worked to navigate financial hurdles in 2024, by adjusting the operating schedule, and focusing mainly on events, school tours, bus tours, and group bookings throughout September.

The society noted this method proved effective, as October was a strong revenue month.

“Our community, supporters, and volunteers have truly stepped up to help us through these challenging times,” Bruce Cummings, president of the society, said.

“We’ve been humbled by the generosity of so many who have contributed both their time and money. Our volunteers have been absolutely vital in keeping the Ranch running smoothly, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their dedication.”

The Ranch said it was able to provide 30 summer jobs for students and youth through the Youth Employment Skills grant this year, but has also reduced its paid staff to a minimal number, focusing on safety and essential operations, while relying on volunteers to support the historic site this year.

Looking ahead to the coming year, the O’Keefe Ranch said it was pursuing fundraising and grant opportunities to support operations, from smaller initiatives like plant and yard sales, to large events, including the possible return of the “Black Tie and Blue Jeans” gala.

“We’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re hopeful for what the future holds,” Cummings said.

“With the support of our community and ongoing fundraising efforts, we plan to continue operations until at least March 21, 2027, the end of our lease with the City of Vernon. We are exploring every avenue to ensure that O’Keefe Ranch remains an important cultural and historical resource for future generations.”

The Society noted it remained committed to preserving the North Okanagan’s historical legacy and offering a range of events and programs.
