A man from Kelowna is facing drug charges after a fentanyl production super-lab was raided in Northern Alberta.

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT), in partnership with the RCMP”s Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement Response Team, searched a property in a rural location near Valleyview on Oct. 2, 2024.

The four day operation saw officers search the property and dismantled the highly sophisticated drug lab operation that was being used to produce processed fentanyl.

Steven Mogg, a 55-year-old man from Kelowna, was the sole person arrested in the investigation.

Police said Mogg was the alleged main “cook” at the operation, and was charged with production of a controlled substance, and possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking.

During the search, police also recovered 7 kilograms of processed fentanyl with a street value of roughly $700,000; 4,200 litres of suspected fentanyl precursor chemicals; 1,500 litres of chemical waste used in production; and tens-of-thousands of dollars worth of industrial grade and specialized lab equipment.

ALERT believed the lab to have been operational for at least two years, and be connected to larger interprovincial organized crime group operating in Western canada and involved with producing and distributing drugs, as well as importing chemicals.

The investigation into the drug super-lab was ongoing.
