Vernon condos damaged in Sunday morning fire

A condominium complex was damaged after a fire broke out Sunday morning.

The fire started around 8:40 a.m. Nov.3 in the 4000 block of 34th Street.

Smoke was highly visible in the area and fire crews were dispatched to the scene.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services arrived on the scene and discovered a unit fully engulfed in flames, with fire and smoke extending to the roof and neighbouring suites.

Crews worked to control the blaze but six units still sustained extensive fire, smoke and water damage.

Firefighters also assisted one person in the upstairs unit where the fire started escape from their balcony.

“Their quick action, ensured everyone was able to make it to safety during this incident,” VFRS Deputy Chief, Alan Hofsink, said.

“I also want to remind residents that working smoke alarms are essential for home safety. It’s crucial to check them regularly to ensure they’re functioning properly.”

The apartment complex was evacuated pending a damage assessment, and Emergency Support Services was assisting affected residents.

The cause of the fire was not disclosed.
