The provincial government has rolled out new vaccines ahead of the influenza season.

Shots with the formula to protect against the latest influenza strain, along with updated COVID-19 jabs, have rolled out and are available in pharmacies across B.C.

“This is the time of year when we see increases in viral respiratory illnesses in B.C., including influenza and COVID-19, so it is particularly important to remember healthy habits we can all follow to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our communities,” Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer, said.

“That includes covering your cough, cleaning your hands regularly, staying away from others if you have a cough or a fever, wearing a mask if you have lingering symptoms or need extra protection, and getting the updated influenza and COVID-19 vaccines. By getting immunized for both influenza and COVID-19, we are not only protecting ourselves, but also those around us.”

People who fall within the priority population categories were invited to get their shots on Oct. 8. Those include seniors, residents of long-term care facilities, people with compromised immune systems and chronic health care problems , and health care workers.

The province noted that Oct. 15, 2024, saw a record breaking 81,859 vaccinations administered across the province. Those included 49,425 for influenza and 32,434 for COVID-19.

The opening week of having vaccinations available for the general public, which began on Oct. 15, saw a combined 369,774 vaccines administered, which was also a record high.

B.C. ordered 2.3-million doses of the updated influenza vaccines and 2.2-million doses of COVID-19 shots to combat the respiratory illness season, and Henry advised everyone aged six months and older get the jabs, adding people should exercise healthy habits during the fall and winter months as well.

People can book a vaccination appointment at pharmacies throughout B.C. by visiting the province’s website.
