September was another relatively slow month is Greater Vernon’s housing construction sector.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reported that 20 housing projects were started in Greater Vernon last month.

That figure was up from August’s total of 12 projects, and well above the three housing starts in September of 2023.

However, that did not close the gap in the year to date totals, which have se far seen 137 housing projects starts locally in 2024, compare to 272 starts in the same period the year before.

The housing projects started in the most recent month included 12 row houses, seven single-detached homes, and one apartment.

The province did see housing starts climb some in September.

CMHC said there were 3,461 housing starts across B.C. in September, bringing the year to date total up to 32,253 housing starts.

The monthly total was above the 3,160 projects started in September of 2023, though the year to date total was still down from 2023 when there were 35,051 starts in te first nine months of the year.

Canada as a whole, meanwhile, saw opposite figures when compared to B.C.

CMHC said there were 18,806 housing starts across the nation in the most recent month, down from the previous September’s total of 22,184 starts.

However, to date there have been 168,442 housing projects started across Canada in 2024, which was up when compared to the 165,243 starts during the same period of the previous year.
