Young Agrarians to host Land Linking Workshop in Kelowna

The organization that supports the next generation of farmers will host a Land Linking Workshop in the Okanagan later this month.

The Young Agrarians, working alongside the B.C. Land Matching Program (BCLMP) will host the workshop aimed at bringing together land seekers and landholders to a network where they can explore possible land matches and learn how to navigate land sharing and lease agreements.

Farmers and landholders from throughout the Okanagan and Thompson areas are invited to participate in the event.

“At the Land Linking Workshop, you’ll hear insights on land leasing from matched farmers and landholders, and get a chance to ask your burning questions.,” Pascale Schittecatte, Young Agrarians BCLMP Manager, said.

“Our goal is to connect people with each other and with their regional land matcher to receive ongoing support and potentially make a match through the B.C. Land Matching Program.”

BCLMP launched in August of 2018 and, to date, has made over 343 matches that connected farmers to 12,339 acres of land throughout British Columbia.

Young Agrarians said this program is needed as the Okanagan has lost 1,285 farms since 2006, according to the Canadian Census of Agriculture, and the BCLMP can provide the supports people need to expand their farms, market gardens, livestock operations, and vineyards.

The Okanagan-Thompson Land Linking Workshop will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Okanagan Mission Community Hall in Kelowna on October 27. The event is free but donations can be made at the door. Details on how to register can be found at the Young Agrarians website.
