Okanagan residents asked to fill in daily travel survey

Select households in Vernon, Kelowna, and other Okanagan communities will be asked to provide information on their daily commutes.

Randomly selected households in the Okanagan communities will receive invitations in the mail to participate in the 2024 Okanagan Travel Survey, starting Monday, Oct. 7.

Anyone who receives a letter was asked to fill out the survey before the closing deadline, to help direct infrastructure decision making in their community.

“The Canadian census collects some information on travel to work behaviours, however, it lacks information on all the other trips that residents take in their daily lives including school, personal appointments and errands,” Suzanne Therrien, Transportation Planner for the City of Kelowna, said.

“The Okanagan Travel Survey, last conducted in 2018, provides critical information on trips taken by residents to ensure that future transportation planning accounts for all needs.”

Participants will be asked to detail their daily travel trips, the modes of transportation they use and the time it takes them to reach their destinations.

“Transportation planning includes road improvements, traffic reduction strategies, transit route and service improvements or active transportation patterns,” Anne Huisken, Transportation Planner for the City of Vernon, stated.

“Information provided in this survey allows us to make evidence-based plans on which transportation needs to prioritize based on behaviors and patterns of residents.”

Households in Vernon, Kelowna, Lake Country, West Bank First Nation, and Peachland have been randomly selected to participate in the survey, which is being conducted by the research firm Ipsos on behalf of the participating municipalities and First Nation and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.
