The Regional District of North Okanagan has added its new sncəcmałqtn Agricultural Park to the Electoral Areas B and C parks service.

The 5.5 hectare sncəcmałqtn Agricultural Park, located at the site of the former BX Ranchlands at 4122 East Vernon Road, is intended to be a community resource for agriculture, recreation and habitat conservation.

“The establishment of this Agricultural Park marks a significant achievement for our region which will help foster sustainable agricultural practices and support local farmers while preserving a beautiful, ecologically diverse property with a rich history,” Bob Fleming, director of RDNO Electoral Area B, said.

“It will serve as a hub for education, innovation, and collaboration – ensuring that agriculture remains a vibrant and essential part of our regional identity both now and for the future.”

Along with establishing the park, the RDNO developed several agricultural land license opportunities for individual farmers and community groups to apply for 1/4 of an acre, one acre, or larger plots. Details on the application process can be found at the RDNO website.

“This represents a new chapter for our local agricultural community,” Amanda Shatzko, director of RDNO Electoral Area C, said.

“By investing in this space, we are not only supporting sustainable farming practices but also strengthening our region’s food security and promoting a healthier, more resilient future for everyone.”

The Okanagan Indian Band was consulted in renaming the park as sncəcmałqtn Agricultural Park, which is a Syilx word that translates to “place of small crops or garden.”
