High Bacterial Levels

Swim Advisory issued for Kal Beach

Aug 26, 2024 | 5:04 PM

Swimming is not recommended at Kalamalka Beach.

The District of Coldstream and Interior Health issued a Swimming Advisory for the beach at the north end of the lake Monday, August 26, after high bacteria levels were found at various locations in the swimming area.

The District said the prolonged hot summer weather had escalated bacteria and algae growth in the lake, and the strong winds last week stirred up the water and brought the bacteria and algae toward the beach.

Water at Kal Beach will be tested in the coming days and the advisory will be lifted when bacteria levels return to within the acceptable swimming range.

Until the advisory is lifted, the District of Coldstream advises people avoid swimming in the lake, especially if it’s within 24 hours of a significant rainfall or if they have an open cut or wound. People should also avoid swallowing lake water, stay away from the water if experiencing digestive or intestinal problems, and to always wash hands before handling food.
