Public input sought for future of Vernon’s Aquatics Centre

The City of Vernon is asking for public input on what should happen to the indoor pool and rec centre.

Construction of the new Active Living Centre is well underway, putting into question what purpose the existing aquatic centre could pose in the future.

Vernon Recreation asked the public for ideas, stories an input on how to repurpose the facility with an online survey, which will be open until September 23.

“Public feedback will help shape how the Vernon Aquatic Centre space is used to meet community needs and ensure it provides necessary space for current and future services, programs or activities,” Shane Wright, Vernon’s Community Recreation manager, said.

Information booths will also be set up at various locations over the coming weeks for people to provide their input on the future use of the existing facility, as well as learn about the new ALC. Those public engagement sessions will go:

  • Sept. 10: Open house at Kal Tire Place’s Civic Room, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Sept. 13: Pop-Up Booth at Village Green Shopping Centre, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Sept. 13: Pop-Up Booth at Kal Tire Place South’s concourse, 6:30 to 8::30 p.m.
  • Oct. 22: Open house at Vernon Recreation Centre from 12 to 4 p.m.
  • Oct. 23: Open House at Vernon Recreation Centre from 4 to 8 p.m.

The City of Vernon stated a Aquatic Centre Repurposing Study is expected to be complete by the late-fall of 2024.
