The first major batch of concrete has been poured at the site of the new Active Living Centre.

After weeks of excavation and site preparation, more than 30 truckloads of concrete was poured for Vernon’s new recreation hub Friday, August 16.

“Today’s concrete pour is a significant step and a tangible sign of progress towards realizing our vision for a modern, accessible, and inclusive recreation centre,” said Mayor Victor Cumming said in a release.

“This milestone underscores Council’s commitment to delivering a new facility designed to promote health and well being to meet the needs of Vernon’s growing community.”

The city said a total of 300 cubic meters of concrete was poured at the site Friday, and that it took roughly six hours to complete the work.

“Since breaking ground in April, work on the new Active Living Centre has been focused on site preparation, utility installation and construction outbuildings,” Doug Ross, Manager of the ALC Project Program, added.

“This first major concrete pour is a pivotal moment in the construction of the Active Living Centre. For all of the Integrated Project Delivery partners it is exciting to see the community’s shared vision of the facility begin to take shape.”

The facility at the site of the former Kin Race Track Lands was reported as being on time and on budget as of Monday. The ALC is expected to be open in the fall of 2026, and the city has set the maximum construction cost for the project at just under $136-million.
