Progress is being made to build Vernon’s newest recreation hub.

A quarterly report on the new Activ Living Centre (ALC) says, four months into construction, the project is on track to be delivered on time and on budget.

The report, which will be presented to Vernon City Council at the Committee of the Whole meeting this morning (Aug. 9), stated the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) design and construction team have completed the design elements needed for early construction, including site utilities, excavation, pool mechanical basement, foundations and more, and are now working to build the steel and mass timber superstructure where the pools and related mechanical rooms will be located.

A new underground storm main had also been tied in to the site, bulk excavation of the basement was nearly completed, waterproofing of the basement was over halfway complete, and the installation of reinforcing steel for the basement slab had started as of as of time of reporting.

Permit applications for the leisure pool basins, aquatic elements such as the slide and spray features, pool piping and filtration systems, and other similar elements have also been submitted to Interior Health. These permits must be granted before construction on the pools can begin.

Looking ahead, the next quarter will see work begin on the building envelope; the design and development of the mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems; a building code review; completion of the structural designs for the gymnasium, fitness centre, and public spaces; and the development of a landscaping plan.

The report noted the project team would be reviewing public input gathered through past engagement sessions to help guide the design, which will incorporate local First Nations elements. The team will then create concept images, which will first be shared with the Okanagan Indian Band community for feedback, before being brought before City Council for further review.

The project team added it will begin considering sponsorship and naming right opportunities for the ALC in the near future.

The new facility is scheduled to be built and ready to open by the fall of 2026 and will not exceed an allowable cost of $135,941,009.
