Thunderstorm Watch

Thunderstorms expected in the Okanagan, surrounding area

Aug 9, 2024 | 1:39 PM

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for the Okanagan Friday.

A similar watch was issued for the Shuswap and the entire Thompson areas.

The notice was issued shortly before 1 p.m. August 9, with Environment Canada saying “conditions are favourable for the developement of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and torrential rain.”

The weather agency warned that lightning strikes can be deadly, and advised that “when thunder roars, go indoors!”

It was also noted that strong winds can blow around loose items and cause tree limbs to break, and that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Environment Canada added the thunderstorm could also produce large hail.

As of 1 p.m. Friday, the weather agency’s forecast called for a risk of thunderstorms Friday afternoon though to Saturday afternoon, but clearing ahead of a sunny Sunday.

Additionally, the Smoky Skies Bulletin related to air quality and wildfire smoke was lifted Friday afternoon.
