Air quality advisory issued for Vernon, North Okanagan

Aug 7, 2024 | 1:56 PM

The smoke from the area wildfires has impacted the air quality.

Environment Canada issued a Smoky Skies Bulletin for Vernon and the North Okanagan Wednesday, August 7.

The weather agency said the wildfire smoke lead to the air quality health index being increased to Level 4, indicating a moderate risk to people’s health due to the fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke.

People most at risk of adverse health impacts include seniors, pregnant women, people who smoke, infants and young children, people who work outdoors, people involved in strenuous outdoor exercise, and people with an existing illness or chronic health conditions.

People are advised to limit their time outdoors if they are more susceptible to the smoke, reschedule strenuous outdoor activities, and use a respirator type mask to reduce exposure to the particulate matter.

When indoors, people should keep windows and doors closed as much as possible, and use an air filtration system.

Environment Canada also recommended people check in on those who may be more susceptible.

The weather agency said the Smoky Skies Bulletin should be in place for 24 to 48 hours, though noted a change in wind direction or localized rain may improve the air quality.
