Sewer line break leads to beach closures in Vernon

Aug 6, 2024 | 3:09 PM

Swimming at the Okanagan Lake beaches in Vernon is not recommended following a sewer line break.

The City of Vernon said the incident in the Okanagan Landing area Tuesday, August 6, led to the beaches from Kin Beach to Paddlewheel Park being temporarily closed.

The city said crews were repairing the sewer line break Tuesday afternoon.

The spill was isolated within the storm management system, but due to its proximity to the water bodies and waterways it was possible that the beaches could be contaminated.

The city said the beaches in the south-east arm of Okanagan Lake in Vernon would be temporarily closed until testing confirms the water quality is at an acceptable bacterial level.

Signage advising people to stay out of the water were posted at the affected beaches.
