Trail riders, dirt jumpers, hikers and other outdoor recreators will have access to an updated amenity in time for the B.C. Day long weekend.

The City of Vernon will reopen the upgraded Becker Bike Park at 4 p.m. on Friday.

The upgraded park includes a paved pump track that can accommodate skateboards, scooters, rollerblades, and BMX bikes among others; a dirt jump zone with progression-focused jump lines for everyone from beginners to experts; a drop zone with three lines for intermediate to expert riders; and improvements and additions to the trail network.

“This modern mountain bike skills park offers fantastic new amenities for both residents and visitors, enhancing Vernon’s appeal as a top destination for outdoor activities,” Mayor Victor Cumming stated.

“We are grateful for the financial support from the Province of British Columbia and the collaborative efforts of the North Okanagan Cycling Society and our dedicated City staff. Together, we’ve created a safe, fun, and progressive facility that will benefit our community for years to come.”

The upgraded park, which is part of the City’s Master Plan and supports Tourism Vernon’s Five-Year Strategy by emphasizing mountain biking and trails, was supported by a $500,000 Destination Development Fund grant through B.C.’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport.

“Our government is proud to support the tourism sector and visitors who travel throughout the province,” Lana Popham, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, said.

“By supporting tourism infrastructure projects like Becker Bike Park, we are increasing community vibrancy for locals and visitors and ensuring riders have an inclusive, world-class experience.”

The revitalization project was also supported by the North Okanagan Cycling Society (NOCS), which played a key role in developing a concept plan. Local youth associated with NOCS were also involved in the construction of one of the trails.

“Our youth have been eagerly anticipating this bike park, and we are thrilled to see it come to fruition. Designed for everyone, we anticipate it will be enjoyed by all ages,” Julie Melanson, Executive Director of NOCS, said.

“The involvement of the youth in the build through a trail day was particularly rewarding, allowing them to be part of the process and making the project even more special.”

In total, the upgrades to the Becker Bike Park, including the work to improve storm infrastructure and protect existing infrastructure at the site, cost $1,062,000.
