Several projects set out as part of the City of Vernon’s Council Strategic Plan have been completed.

The City of Vernon said the 2023-26 Council Strategic Plan has clear priorities in the key areas of livability, vibrancy, recreation, parks and natural areas, environmental leadership, and governance and organizational excellence.

In a mid-term update, the city said a number of key achievements set out in the strategic plan had been met over the past year.

Those include the completion of the Lakeview Wading “Peanut” Pool; the opening of the full Silver Star Road Multi-Use Path; Tourism Vernon’s brand refresh and the launching of the new website; and moving forward with the Age and Dementia Friendly Community Plan.

The city added work at the site of the new Active Living Centre, Vernon’s largest capital project ever, was underway with concrete pouring set to begin in late-July.

“Our progress in the first year of the strategic plan shows we’re on the right track,” Mayor Victor Cumming said.

“We’re committed to continuing this momentum and making Vernon an even better place to live and thrive.”

The city added Council adopted Zoning Bylaw 6000 to align with the new provincial housing legislation intended to streamline the development process.

Several other initiatives as part of that plan remained ongoing, such as the development of the new Official Community Plan and Transportation Plan.

“The first year of the strategic plan has been productive, but there is much more work to do,” Terry Barton, Vernon’s Director of Planning and Community Services.

“Staff and administration will keep working hard to support Council and the community’s vision for the City’s future growth.”

The city will regular report on the Strategic plan and its initiatives. The 2023-26 Council Strategic Plan and its corresponding Action Plan can be seen at the city’s website.
