An Evacuation Alert at Sugar Lake has been upgraded to an Order.

The Regional District of North Okanagan issued an Evacuation Order for the west side of the Sugar Lake Recreation Area shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, as the nearby Sitkum Creek wildfire remains Out of Control and had spread to cover 1,501 hectares as of Tuesday afternoon.

The Order affects all land east of Sugar Lake, from the southern end to the northern tip, as well as all sites within Sugar Lake Resort at 1630 Sugar Lake Rd.

Anyone in the area is asked to immediately shut off all gas and electrical appliances, other than refrigerators and freezers; close all doors and windows; close, but don’t lock, gates; take critical items such as medicine, identification and enough clothing and supplies to last 72 hours; gather family and pets; and leave the evacuation zone.

The RDNO also asked people to not use their phones unless they were in need of emergency services.

People are advised to leave the area via Kate Creek Forest Service Road to Sugar Lake Road towards Cherryville, with the RDNO adding it does not advise people travel from Sugar Lake to Spectrum or Greenbush Lake.

Additionally, the RDNO issued an Evacuation Alert for all properties on the west side of Sugar Lake, and people in that area are advised to prepare themselves to leave in a moment’s notice.
