Vehicle rollover a result of excessive speed

Police are reminding people to watch their speeds after a vehicle flipped on the bridge crossing Okanagan Lake in Kelowna.

B.C. Highway Patrol had been conducting speed enforcement operations throughout the province the past week. As a result of those, at around 5 p.m. July 9, police clocked a grey four-door hatchback travelling west on the William Bennett Bridge (Highway 97) at excessive speeds of more than 105 km/h in the 60 zone.

Police said before officers could conduct a traffic stop the vehicle lost control, striking both the centre and right side medians, and rolling onto its roof.

The driver and sole occupant, who was prohibited from driving under the Motor Vehicle Act, did not suffer any life-threating injuries in the crash.

B.C. Highway Patrol reminds people to stick to the speed limit as exceeding those limits reduce a driver’s time to react, requires more distance to slow down and stop, and makes collisions more deadly. Speeding also increases the risk of losing control and navigating corners, leading to skidding, sliding and rollovers.

“Our B.C. Highway Patrol teams across the Okanagan will continue to coordinate regular speed enforcement across our highways to save lives and reduce injuries,” Inspector Rob Nason, officer in charge of BCHP Central, said.

“Speeding is the leading cause of vehicle collision fatalities in British Columbia and I encourage everyone to obey the posted speed limits as deaths related to high speed collisions are entirely preventable.”
