FortisBC to implement energy-based rates at EV chargers

Jul 3, 2024 | 11:30 AM

A key utility provider in B.C. will be changing how it charges customers to power up their electric vehicles.

FortisBC was granted approval from the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC) to use an energy-based rate for EV charging stations, meaning people will pay an amount based on how much electricity they use and not how long it takes to charge their vehicles.

“Using energy-based rates ensures that all drivers pay the same rate for the electricity they use regardless of charging speed,” George Thompson, EV infrastructure and investment manager at FortisBC, said.

“Supporting customers who are choosing low- and zero-carbon options for transportation is one of the ways FortisBC is helping to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions in our province.”

Starting August 1, 2024, drivers will pay a new energy-based rate of $0.39 per kilowatt hour at all 22 of the utility’s fast charging stations across the province.

The BCUC has also approved an “idling charge,” allowing FortisBC to charge a driver $0.40 per minute if they stay at a charging station more than five minutes after fully recharging. FortisBC argues this will reduce the wait time for other customers.
