Lots to see and do for Vernon’s Canada Day including new drone show

Canada’s 157th birthday will be celebrated in Vernon with a whole day of activities in Polson Park.

Events will begin at 10 a.m. with a kids skate competition, followed by live performances starting at 12:30 p.m. and continuing through the evening.

The day will be capped-off with the Okanagan’s first-ever Drone Show at 10 p.m.

“Watch in awe as 250 drones light up the sky in a 15-minute performance that promises to be a highlight of the day,” a statement from the City of Vernon said.

The show is made possible by Tourism Vernon, Black and MacDonald and the City of Vernon.

Mayla Janzen from the Vernon-Okanagan Inspired Community Events Society (VOICE), which is organizing the festivities in Polson Park, said they’ve worked incredibly hard the last few weeks to make the drone show possible.

“We’ve been seeking out alternatives to the fireworks cause we know how much you all love them, but also we had a pretty fast grassfire in town this week (at the corner of Highway 6 and 27th Street), and shooting fire in the air doesn’t make sense in the summer. We’re very proud of ourselves for pulling this off, the opportunity was only presented to us at the end of May,” Janzen said on social media.

Event Details:

  • Date: July 1, 2024

In addition to the events, the Polson Artisan Market will be in the park as well as a large selection of food trucks.

Despite the ongoing project to naturalize Vernon Creek, the park will be opened-up to the public for the Canada Day event.

“The overflow parking will be open at the end of the park, so we should have good parking available there, but also consider alterative transportation like riding a bike, or taking the bus (it drops off right across from Tim Hortons roughly),” Janzen advised.
