B.C. residents looking to generate their own electricity will be able to access some financial aid.

B.C. Hydro will be providing its first ever rebates for the installation of rooftop solar and battery-storage systems.

The program, which supports B.C.’s new clean-energy strategy, will allow people to more easily access systems to generate their own electricity, reduce their power bills, and deliver clean energy back to the grid.

Eligible homeowners will be able to receive B.C. Hydro rebates totalling as much as $5,000 each for the installation of a qualified solar photovoltaic (PV) system and battery storage system.

Targeted rebates will also be rolled out for apartment buildings, schools, community organizations, local governments, small businesses, social-housing providers and Indigenous communities, which could be valued at between $50,000 and $150,000, depending on the individual customer and the systems installed.

“At BC Hydro, we have a critical role in supporting the clean-energy transition in B.C., and we know that investing in our system today puts us on the path of meeting tomorrow’s needs,” Chris O’Reiley, president and CEO of B.C. Hydro, said.

“That’s why we’re taking a series of decisive actions to source the clean electricity needed, build out our infrastructure to meet future demand, and invest in electricity efficiency to provide our customers with more choice and flexibility through new programs, tools and incentives that will help them save energy and money.”

Rebates will be available in late-July. Details on eligibility can be found at the B.C. Hydro website.

“We need more clean energy to power our homes, businesses and industries, to power a growing economy and to power our future,” Josie Osborne, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation, said.

“British Columbians are up for the challenge. That’s why we are providing new BC Hydro rebates for rooftop solar panels and battery storage so that more people across the province can generate electricity, save on their energy bills and help build a clean economy.”

The funding for the rebates will come through B.C. Hydro’s new three-year, $700-million Energy Efficiency Plan, which will also see investments made into tools, technologies and programs.
