Jun 26, 2024 | 10:50 AM

Communities throughout the Okanagan could see some thunder and lightning activity Thursday.

Environment Canada issued a Okanagan-wide Severe Thunderstorm Watch at 10:11 a.m. June 26, warning that conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms.

The storm could produce lightning strikes, strong wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain.

The weather agency warns that lightning strikes can be deadly, and advises people stay indoor during storms.

The storm could also produce heavy downpours, which could result in flash floods, debris flows over areas impacted by previous burns, and water pooling on roads. The potential for hail and strong winds could also put people and properties at risk or damage or injury.

Environment Canada’s forecasts for Vernon and Kelowna shows the risk of thunderstorms developing around 2 p.m., but the storm easing off to just showers by 9 p.m.
