Five bystanders will be receiving an award for stepping in and helping someone in need.

B.C. Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) says five people, who helped save the life of a recreational hockey player who suffered a cardiac arrest at Priest Valley Arena in Vernon, will be presented with Vital Link Awards.

BCEHS said David Hampton collapsed on the bench after playing a shift of adult hockey at the Vernon Recreation Complex rink on January 24, 2023.

His teammates recognized he was in cardiac arrest, immediately called 911 and started CPR, while other bystanders went to retrieve an automated external defibrillator (AED).

The AED was used and bystanders continued CPR until Hampton started breathing on his own and regained consciousness.

When paramedics arrived at the arena, Hampton was awake and able to answer simple questions. He was provided further medical treatment at the scene before being taken to Kelowna General Hospital for an emergency coronary intervention.

The Vital Link Awards will be presented to Scott Ross, Bob Outhwaite, Ron Burton, Jeff Moore, and Mitch Nystrom at a special ceremony at the B.C. Ambulance Station in Vernon Monday, June 24.
