Police have issued more details about an ATV crash that took the life of a teenager from the Barriere area, nort of Kamloops.

In a news release issued Tuesday (June 11), RCMP E-Division spokesperson Cpl. James Grandy confirmed the incident happened Sunday afternoon near the 2-kilometre mark of the Darlington Creek Forest Service Road.

Grandy said a 15-year-old was driving an ATV when it rolled. The teen, identified by the principal of Barriere Secondary School as Myles Martens, died of his injuries.

RCMP said a passenger on the ATV suffered minor injuries.

Investigators have gathered evidence suggesting the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, though there was one available.

“This tragic event has had a significant impact on all communities surrounding Barriere,” Cpl. Kyle Camalush said. “The Barriere RCMP wish to send our condolences to the families and friends of those involved during this difficult time.”

Anyone with further information on the incident is asked to contact the Barriere detachment at (250) 672-9918.

The death comes two weeks after Valleyview Secondary student Jakob Gottfriedson was killed in an automobile crash.
