A non-profit group has more ‘fuel’ to fund its programs after a fundraiser in Vernon.

The 11th annual Propane for Pets was held Saturday, April 27 at the Petro Pass on 48th Avenue.

Participants could get their propane tanks filled for $10 (or whatever amount they donated), and buy a hot dog, with the proceeds going to the Okanagan Humane Society (OHS).

Superior Propane donated the propane, while Cobs Bread and T-Bones donated buns and hot dogs.

The four-hour event raised $5,432 for the animal care society, better than last year’s $4,815

Alicia, a volunteer with the OHS, told Vernon Matters, because the Okanagan Human Society doesn’t have a shelter, they rely on foster families to care for pets until they find new owners.

“We are always looking for more foster families, especially for dogs,” Alicia said. “We get a lot of cats, but it’s very hard to place dogs. And we especially need homes in the north as rescues are increasing in that area.

“What we expect from our fosters is just a loving home and to provide supplies, such as litter, walks and food if you can.”

Alicia says using foster families allows them to keep their costs down, and she added 90 per cent of their donations go straight to animal care and saving the lives of animals.
