The City of Vernon will celebrate Earth Day next week by rolling out two green initiatives.

On Monday, April 22, applications will open for both the 2024 sustainability grants and the tree voucher program.

“There has never been a more important time to take action at a local level in order to foster a more sustainable way of life,” Mayor Victor Cumming said.

“These two programs that are being offered by the city will provide excellent opportunities for our citizens to connect with one another, take small easy steps forward, and possibly establish new, home-grown sustainability initiatives from the ground up.”

The sustainability grants program provides up to $2,000 for community-led projects that promote sustainability and environmental and community resiliency.

Residents, youths, non-profit organizations and community groups will have until June 15 to apply for the funding.

The Tree Voucher program provides Vernon residents with a $25 voucher towards the purchase of a shade tree to plant in their year. Vouchers may be used at Nicholas Alexander Home and Garden Centre or Swan Lake Market and Garden.

“We are encouraging residents to plant trees,” Climate Action Specialist, Kevin McCarty, said.

“Trees can help offer energy cost savings by providing shade, reduce sound and dust pollution to your property, and reduce the impacts of stormwater on flood events, all while enhancing the value of your property.”

Vouchers are limited, and only one will be given per household.
