The third phase of Armstrong’s revitalization plan is ready for public input.

The city will hold an open house Tuesday, April 16 to get feedback on draft designs for the core commercial areas.

The drop-in event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at Spirit Square in the Train Station.

The designs were developed by city staff based on input from the community for the Comprehensive Armstrong Revitalization Initiative (CARI) project. The initiative is reimagining the main corridor, from Smith Drive, along Pleasant Valley Road/Boulevard, including one block of Okanagan Street, to the new City Hall.

“The project will set the stage for updating the look, feel and function of the study areas. We are focusing on enhancing safety, creating inviting public spaces, improving landscaping, promoting active transportation, designing wayfinding signage, and integrating rail trail connections,” the city’s website stated.

Mayor Joe Cramer said the draft plan is exciting to review.

“With increases to gathering spaces, trail connections, and improved safety through new parking alignment near the downtown intersections, there is a lot to look forward to in this plan for our downtown,” Cramer said. “I encourage residents to take the opportunity to tell us what you like about the plan, and any suggestions for improvements.”

Manager of planning services Laurie Cordell said the open house will have a variety of stations that community members can visit to see the design and provide their input

“It’s an informal opportunity for people to talk to staff and the consulting team about the project,” Cordell said.

For those who can’t attend an in-person event, and want to provide feedback, they can go to heartoftown.ca to see the designs and add a comment.

The planning project has been funded by BC’s Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program and the Economic Trust of the Southern Interior.

Funding for construction is not part of this project and will be considered through future City budget and grant application processes.
