More local gardens needed for Garden Tour

The 20th annual People Place Society Garden Tour is scheduled for Saturday, June 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The People Place has several volunteers, but needs more gardens.

“We can’t print the ticket/brochures which include the garden descriptions and map, until we have the gardens,” managers Melanie O’Hara-Hutchinson and Katherine Mortimer said.

“Currently we are looking for garden hosts, meaning that we are looking for garden owners, who would be willing to have their garden on the tour.”

A community garden or school garden could also be part of the tour. Residents can also show off their xeriscaped garden. Both vegetable and flower gardens are welcome.

The gardens do not need to be masterpieces. Small and larger gardens are accepted.

If people have a garden they’d like to see featured, they’re asked to please contact peopleplacesociety@gmail.com or manager@peopleplacevernon.ca or call 250-558-6585.

“Both Nexus Community Gardens will be a part of this year’s tour, and we have a garden in Coldstream secured. Ideally, we’d like to have at least three more gardens,” the managers said.

The social agency could also use more volunteers to help at each of the gardens, and garden hosts are also welcome to help out as well. Some hosts prefer to be in the background, while others like to talk about their garden, and take people on the tour themselves.

“Generally, it’s a self-guided tour, but we really need VOLUNTEERS and GARDENS to have the tour flourish!”

The garden tour is The People Place’s major fundraiser for the year.
