A Vernon city councillor will be pursuing a role in federal politics.

Teresa Durning announced she will be seeking the Conservative Party of Canada candidate nomination for the Vernon-Lake Country-Monashee federal riding.

In a release, Durning stated she is committed to “stopping unnecessary taxes and giving constituents the freedom to make their own choices.”

Durning has served on Vernon city council since winning a 2021 by-election, and then earning her seat for a second term in 2022.

As a city councillor, Durning sits on multiple boards including Arts Council of North Okanagan, Vernon Winter Carnival, Seniors Action Society, O’Keefe Ranch, and the City of Vernon Tourism Commission.

She has also worked for the House of Commons as a constituency assistant to North Okanagan-Shuswap MP Mel Arnold for the past four years.

The new Vernon-Lake Country-Monashee riding will come into effect on April 22, 2024.

The CPC will hold a nomination vote to determine the candidate for the new riding. Only Conservative Party members will be able to cast a vote for the nominees, a date for which has not been announced yet.

Former Vernon city councillor Scott Anderson previously announced he will seek the CPC nomination for the new riding.
