Construction of Active Living Centre ready to begin

Preliminary construction work at the site of Vernon’s new Active Living Centre will start as early as next week, with shovels in the ground a few weeks later.

The City of Vernon said fencing will be erected around the construction site starting Monday, March 25, to enclose the south end of the former Kin Race Track lands on 43rd Avenue.

Site preparation work is expected to begin April 1, allowing for construction activities to get underway in the spring.

Crews will be entering the work site off 43rd Avenue, which may cause disruptions to local traffic.

Walkers and other track users will be limited to the north end of the Kin Race Track property once the fences are up, and the city asks these people to use the Kal Tire Place-North parking lot when visiting the site.

The City of Vernon said efforts would be taken to maintain the overflow gravel parking area at the south end of the Kin Race Track lands.

The ALC project team will be available to provide the public with details on the project via an information booth set up at the Vernon Home Show both Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24, and at the Chamber of Commerce Community Expo on April 20.

The city announced last month that up to $15 million dollars in extra features have been added to the conceptual design of the venue, now estimated at $136 million.

The planned enhancements include a major water slide, a Wow WaveBall, a Ninja Cross course, additional interactive spray features, a cold plunge pool as well as increasing the length of the walking/running track to 185 meters and adding a fourth lane.

The ALC’s basic components include an aquatic centre with an eight lane 50-meter pool with a moveable bulkhead and two diving boards; leisure pool with zero depth beach entry; tot slide; spray features; a lazy river and a family hot tub.

Also featured will be a warm water 25-meter x 3 lane teaching pool; sauna; steam room and adult’s only hot tub.

The facility also includes a fitness centre, double gymnasium with multiple sports courts, a synthetic walking/running track and eight dedicated multipurpose activity and program rooms.
