Restrictions on Vernon cemetery tributes taking effect

Mar 11, 2024 | 12:08 PM

Restrictions take effect this week on what can be left at cemetery plots in Vernon through the spring, summer and part of the fall.

Effective Friday, March 15, only fresh-cut floral arrangements in approved tribute holders will be allowed to be left at grave markers in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Non-floral items, including artificial flowers, trinkets, photographs, ceramics, statues, toys, boxes, wire screens, baskets and stands, will not be permitted at an interment site and will be respectfully removed.

Funeral flowers or any type of floral tribute are permitted on the day of a service and for a period of seven days following an interment.

Items that are no longer allowed at plots, including artificial flowers and trinkets, will be removed after March 14.

In 2023, the City of Vernon implemented changes to regulations on what can be left at a grave site to align with operational practices of other cemeteries across B.C. and Canada with the goal of improving safety of the public, cemetary caretakes and maintenance operations, as well as reducing the environmental impacts of leaving such items at a site.

“The City of Vernon understands and respects the need for families to honour loved ones through the placement of offerings at gravesites. This is part of the grieving and healing process. The city welcomes these tributes, within the regulations and guidelines that are listed above, and which are common in many other communities,” the city stated on its website.

“Regulations regarding the placement and removal of offerings were designed to help maintain a peaceful and orderly atmosphere for all who visit the cemetery and to ensure the safety of all who visit and maintain the grounds.”

The regulations permitting only fresh-cut flowers at a Pleasant Valley Cemetery plot will remain in place until October 15, 2024.

Further details on what is permitted at a grave site can be found at the City’s website.
