Weather records set in Vernon and Okanagan

Feb 26, 2024 | 1:30 PM

Record temperatures were set in three Okanagan communities on a blustery Sunday (Feb. 25) including Vernon.

Environment Canada said the weather system on Feb. 25 brought mild weather and gusty winds to the valley with Vernon hitting 13.6 Celsius, breaking the old record of 12.5 set in 1986. Weather records for Vernon date back to 1900.

Penticton reached 16.3 degrees, smashing the old mark of 14.7 set in 1986.

The mercury in Summerland peaked at 15.1 degrees on Sunday, eclipsing the old record of 14.5 also set in 1986.

Environment Canada said the vigorous frontal system that moved across the province Sunday also brought heavy snow to the mountain passes with the following amounts, all in cm:

  • Coquihalla Summit: 30
  • Allison Pass: 26
  • Kootenay Pass: 16
  • Pine Pass: 13-16
  • Rogers Pass: 10-15
  • Yellowhead Highway: 9
