Vernon’s building permit value hits new high

Feb 26, 2024 | 5:00 AM

For the thrid year in a row, the City of Vernon set a new record for building permit values.

A report to Vernon city council by John Perrot, the city’s Manager of Economic Development and Partnerships, showed building permit values were more than $224-million in 2023.

That figure was a new record high, surpassing the $202.4-million in 2022 and $173.57-million in 2021.

The report stated the values were pushed by 444 residential units being approved for construction in 2023, including 123 in the fourth quarter. Of all the residential units approved last year, 278 of them were within multi-family buildings.

The report noted there were 70 building permits issued in the fourth quarter of 2023 as well, down from 103 in the previous three month period.

It was also stated that “development patterns continue to be focused in Vernon’s core and along main transportation corridors.”

Perrott’s report noted the processing time for building permits was under four weeks in the fourth quarter of 2023. The average timeline for processing development permits was between four and six months, while the processing time for a development variance permit or rezoning application was between six and eight months.

Perrott will present the fourth quarter development findings to city council at the regular meeting Monday, Feb. 26.
